ON THE NATURE OF TRUE DEVOTION

Archbishop Andres B. Quow

True devotion, my beloved flock, is frequently misconstrued as a passive sentiment—a gentle warmth felt in the comfort of a pew. I, Archbishop and Presiding Prelate Sir Andres B. Quow, must respectfully correct this notion. Authentic devotion is not a shelter from life’s tempests but rather the very forge in which our spirit is tempered and proven. It is an active, courageous, and often demanding orientation of the entire self toward the Divine. Consider the scriptural metaphor of the anchor. An anchor does not calm the sea; it fulfills its purpose precisely when the waves are most violent, plunging into the dark depths to find the unseen rock that holds the vessel fast. So it is with our faith. Our prayers, our worship, our acts of charity are not incantations for a placid existence. They are the cables that tether our fragile souls to the bedrock of God’s unchanging character—His mercy, His sovereignty, His everlasting love.

This understanding liberates us from a faith of convenience. When we cease praying for a path devoid of obstacles and instead pray for a heart fortified by God’s presence within those obstacles, our spiritual journey transforms. Our struggles cease to be evidence of God’s absence and become the very theater of His sustaining grace. As your Presiding Prelate, I do not promise you calm waters. Such a promise would be a disservice to the gospel of the Cross. Instead, I pledge to walk with you through every surge, pointing always to the One who commands even the wind and the waves. My role, honored by the title of ‘Sir’ which I bear as a charge to noble service, is to help you cast your anchor deep into the promises of Scripture. Let us therefore embrace a devotion that is robust, expectant, and unshakeable—a devotion that does not fear the storm but trusts in the steadfastness of our God, who is both our refuge and our strength in the midst of it.
