EVERY SAINT HAS A PAST (PART SEVEN)

HH, Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div

II Samuel 11:15  “And he wrote in the letter, saying, ‘Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire [retreat] ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.’”

16  “And it came to pass, when Joab observed [surveyed/performed reconnaissance of] the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.”

Precious Hearts, the “valiant men” are those who are quite certain that they might have to give their lives in the cause for which they are fighting; theirs is basically a suicide mission.  However, even with a beautiful wife waiting for him at home, the stalwart integrity of Uriah will never allow him to resist this assignment.  It is likely that he sees it as a badge of honour that he has been selected for such a dangerous mission to fight for the safety of his wife, his people, and his king.

In addition, do you truly see what has happened, here, Beloved Students?  Joab has become COMPLICIT in David’s murderous scheme: in honouring his king, he is drawn into The Penalty of YAHVEH’s RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT.  Precious Hearts, although it can be most difficult for us, at times, whenever one’s family members, friends, associates, or employers request us to join in doing that which is UNrighteous in The Sight of YAHVEH, we are NEVER to yield to the pressures to do that which is against GOD’s Word, Will, and Way.  Stand up for RIGHTEOUSNESS [Right-Living]!!!

17  “And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.”

As it proves to be the situation in any war, there is the looming specter of death.  The integrity of a Righteous man does NOT save him in the case of Uriah.  Beloved, does YAHVEH GOD Not SEE all that is happening, here?!?  Why Will HE Allow a Righteous man to die at the hands of an out-of-control king?  Precious Hearts, above your will, the will of others, or the will of this Teacher, there Stands The WILL of GOD.  Remember the words of Romans 9:21-23.  Clearly, King David is a vessel that YAHVEH Has CHOSEN For a special PURPOSE.  This is the WHY behind the reason that YAHVEH Does NOT Take David Out, altogether, after such a sin — PURPOSE — GOD’s PURPOSE.

Let us move ahead a few verses and pick up the narrative of our Lesson’s account.

II Samuel 11:26  “And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.”

27  “And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son.  But the thing that David had done Displeased THE LORD.”

Beloved, there is more to this account concerning David, but it is NOT this writer’s objective in today’s study to necessarily address that concern.  What this writer would like to stress is that as great a king as we know David to have been, he had a sordid PAST that was NOT one that was honouring to his GOD.  Listen to the Prophet, Nathan, as he assails David with The Words of [YAHVEH] GOD for what David has done:

II Samuel 12:8  “‘And I [YAHVEH] GOD Gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I Would Moreover Have Given Unto thee such and such things.”

“Wherefore hast thou despised The COMMANDMENT of THE LORD, to do evil in His sight?  Thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.”

10  “Now, therefore, the sword shall NEVER DEPART from thine house; because thou hast despised ME, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.’”

Brethren, do you comprehend what [YAHVEH] GOD is Saying To David in this verse?  [YAHVEH] GOD is Stating That David’s CHILDREN will experience HIS WRATH, as well as will David.  This matter is by no means over!  In The RIGHTEOUSNESS of HIS BEING, [YAHVEH] GOD MUST Exact A Penalty for what has happened.  Do you recall what YAHVEH Says To Moses in Exodus 34:5-7?  Do you SEE, through your Spiritual Eyes, that [YAHVEH] GOD Will HONOUR HIS Word?  What He Has Spoken HE Will Perform.

And now, today’s Study will be CONTINUED TOMORROW …
