Day 15 – March 30: The Unity Jesus Prayed For
“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” – John 17:21
In the final hours before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed. And remarkably, one of His primary concerns was the unity of His followers. Not just the disciples present with Him, but all believers throughout all ages—including us. This wasn’t a casual wish; it was a fervent prayer from the heart of our Saviour.
Notice the standard Jesus sets for our unity: “as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee.” He’s calling for a unity that mirrors the perfect oneness of the Trinity. This isa mystical, supernatural unity that transcends human capability. It’s not unity we manufacture through programs or enforce through rules. It’s unity that flows from our shared life in Christ, from the Holy Spirit dwelling in each believer, connecting us at the deepest spiritual level.
Jesus also reveals the purpose of this unity: “that the world may believe.” Our unity is not an end in itself but a means to a greater end—the evangelization of the world. When the world sees believers from different backgrounds, personalities, and perspectives genuinely loving each other and functioning as one body, it becomes a powerful apologetic for the gospel. It demonstrates that something supernatural is happening.
Conversely, our division undermines our witness. When we’re known more for our conflicts than our love, when we splinter over secondary issues, when we attack other believers publicly, the world shrugs and says, “They’re no different than anyone else.” This grieves the heart of Jesus.
Let us honour Christ’s prayer by pursuing the unity He died to make possible. Let our oneness be so evident, so supernatural, that the world must acknowledge God’s hand upon us.
