HH, Sir Godfrey Gregg
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified (Isaiah 61:1-3, New King James Version).
What Is Anointing?
In Old Testament times, before the coming of Jesus and His Holy Spirit, anointing was performed by men, with oil. God gave instructions on whom to anoint with oil for Divine service, as for example, You shall anoint them, as you anointed their father, that they may minister to Me as priests; for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations (Ex 40:15).

With the coming of the Holy Spirit, all believers can now be like Jesus, described in our main text – chosen, set apart by God for a specific service through the Holy Spirit. There is nothing inherently wrong with oil, but anointing from God should happen before the rubbing of oil, Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: Is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance? (1 Sam 10:1). Obviously, the rubbing of oil is merely an outward symbol of an inward change that the Lord has done through the agency of the Holy Spirit.
Many believers are waiting for the oil before they enter into their anointing, even though you might already have a yearning in your Spirit to start serving God in one area or another. After today, you will enter into your anointing, Amen. On the contrary, some others have been rubbed with oil as part of ordination but they know that on the inside, they lack the anointing of God. This anomaly has one of 2 distinct results – they resort to anger in ministry – they want to fake it till they make it. Or else, they resort to voodoo to try and steal someone else’s anointing.
Unfortunately for them, there is no shortcut to anointing. To have the anointing, God must be with you, just like He was with Jesus during His earthly ministry, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him (Acts 10:38). The bottom line is the Presence of God is the anointing.
