REVEREND MOTHER IVY HUNTE

IN HONOURABLE MEMORY: Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte

A Trail-Blazer of the Spiritual Baptist Faith

St. George Chapel — Trinidad and Tobago

“She fought the good fight, she finished the race, she kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

PREAMBLE

It is with a heart full of gratitude, reverence, and solemn honour that The Mystical Order Ministries, through the pen of its Patriarch and Presiding Prelate Sir Godfrey Gregg — and under the sacred leadership of Patriarch and Chief Apostle Sir Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson — presents this brief in lasting tribute to a pillar of the Spiritual Baptist Faith in Trinidad and Tobago: the beloved and departed Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte, of St. George Chapel.

Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte was more than a servant of God; she was an architect of faith, a guardian of tradition, and a gentle yet unwavering force who helped shape the spiritual landscape of her community. Her life embodied the very essence of the Spiritual Baptist calling — rooted in scripture, animated by the Holy Spirit, and surrendered wholly to the service of God and mankind.

A HERITAGE ROOTED IN LIVING FAITH

The Spiritual Baptist Faith, one of the few indigenous religions of Trinidad and Tobago, has long been carried on the shoulders of devoted men and women who refused to let its sacred fire die. Against a history of persecution — including the shameful Shouter Prohibition Ordinance of 1917, which criminalized their worship for more than three decades — the faithful held firm. Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte was a direct heir to this legacy of courage.

At St. George Chapel, she found both her spiritual home and her divine assignment. It was there that she poured out the fullness of her gifts — her wisdom, her intercessory prayer, her pastoral sensitivity, and her deep knowledge of the faith’s sacred traditions. She did not merely attend the church; she breathed life into it.

A TRAIL-BLAZER: BREAKING GROUND FOR THOSE WHO FOLLOW

The title of Trail-Blazer is not conferred lightly within the Spiritual Baptist Faith. It belongs to those whose footsteps others can follow — those who clear a path through territory unmarked by ease or precedent. Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte earned this distinction through years of faithful, sacrificial, and visionary ministry.

In a tradition where leadership demanded not only spiritual depth but unwavering resilience, Reverend Mother Hunte stood as a model of what it means to lead by example. She guided her congregation through seasons of trial and seasons of celebration, always keeping her eyes fixed on the higher calling. Her ministry at St. George Chapel bore witness to what a consecrated life can accomplish — not through noise or spectacle, but through steady, faithful, Spirit-filled service.

She understood the sacred protocols of the Spiritual Baptist way: the significance of the mourning room, the symbolism of the bell and lota, the power of the ‘seal,’ and the meaning of the colours worn in prayer. She passed these traditions on with both reverence and joy, ensuring that those who came after her would know the richness of their spiritual inheritance.

HER LIVING LEGACY

The legacy of Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte lives on in every soul she mentored, every prayer she prayed, every hand she lifted in times of weakness. The seeds she planted at St. George Chapel continue to bear fruit — in the lives of members she nurtured, in the rituals she upheld with dignity, and in the standard of holiness she set for those who now carry the mantle.

She demonstrated that faithfulness is its own form of greatness. She demonstrated that a Reverend Mother is not merely a title but a calling — a daily choosing of God’s people over personal comfort, of the church’s wellbeing over personal ambition, of prayer over complaint, and of love over indifference.

The Mystical Order Ministries recognises her contribution to the broader tapestry of the Spiritual Baptist Faith across Trinidad and Tobago, and acknowledges St. George Chapel as a place made sacred, in part, by the years she knelt in intercession within its walls.

TRIBUTE FROM THE MYSTICAL ORDER MINISTRIES

On behalf of Patriarch and Chief Apostle Sir Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson, the entire fellowship of The Mystical Order Ministries, and the wider Spiritual Baptist community, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, congregation, and spiritual children of Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte. We honour the memory of a woman who made God her dwelling place and made His people her life’s work.

Let it be said of her, as it was said of the great women of scripture, that she rose up and built what others would only dream of — and that the fruit of her hands will praise her not only in this generation, but in generations yet to come.

She was a Trail-Blazer. She was a Reverend Mother. She was a faithful daughter of the Most High God. And she is gone to her rest — clothed in righteousness, welcomed into the eternal courts of the One she served.

Rest in the Arms of the Almighty, Reverend Mother Ivy Hunte.

Your work endures. Your memory is blessed.
