PURPOSE: DISCOVERING WHY YOU ARE HERE

Pastoral Messages by Matriarch Elnette Edwards

Beloved ones,

Every person was created with purpose. You’re not an accident, not a mistake, not random. God intentionally formed you with specific gifts, passions, and experiences to fulfill a unique assignment that only you can complete. Your life has meaning, direction, and divine intention.

Many people wander through life without purpose, moving from one activity to another without clear direction. They may be busy, even successful by worldly standards, but they lack the deep satisfaction that comes from living purposefully. They’re existing but not truly living the life God designed for them.

I spent years doing good things that weren’t my God-given assignment. I served in various capacities, stayed busy with ministry activities, and worked hard. But something felt off. I was productive but not purposeful. It wasn’t until I sought God specifically about my unique calling that I discovered the particular way He designed me to serve His kingdom.

Discovering purpose requires several things. First, knowing God intimately—purpose flows from relationship with Him. Second, understanding how He made you—your gifts, personality, passions, and experiences all provide clues. Third, recognizing needs around you—often, purpose emerges where your gifts intersect with the world’s needs. Fourth, seeking wise counsel—others often see in us what we miss in ourselves.

Your purpose is also connected to God’s larger purposes. He’s building His kingdom, spreading His gospel, caring for His people, and demonstrating His love to the world. Your specific purpose fits within these overarching goals. You’re not pursuing self-fulfillment—you’re partnering with God in what He’s already doing.

I’ve also learned that purpose often emerges through seasons. What God calls you to in your twenties may differ from your fifties. Roles change, capacities shift, and assignments evolve. But underneath the changing seasons is a consistent theme—the core purpose that threads through your entire life.

Purpose also requires courage. Living purposefully means saying yes to what God has for you and no to everything else, even good opportunities. It means stepping out in faith when the path isn’t clear. It means persevering when purpose feels difficult or delayed. It means staying faithful to your calling even when others don’t understand or support it.

Some people think purpose must be grand—leading thousands, achieving prominence, making headlines. But God measures purpose differently. For some, purpose is raising godly children. For others, it’s serving faithfully in their profession. For others, it’s being a steady presence in their community. No purpose is insignificant if it’s God-ordained.

I’ve watched people abandon their God-given purpose chasing someone else’s. They see another person’s calling and think that’s what they should do. But trying to fulfill someone else’s purpose leads to frustration and ineffectiveness. You can’t be someone else, and they can’t be you. Your unique purpose is yours alone.

Living purposefully also brings fulfillment that nothing else can provide. When you’re doing what God created you to do, there’s a sense of rightness, of alignment, of deep satisfaction. Even when it’s hard, even when it’s costly, there’s joy in knowing you’re fulfilling your design.

If you don’t know your purpose, ask God to reveal it. Pay attention to what brings you alive, what breaks your heart, what you’re good at, and what people consistently affirm in you. These are clues to your purpose. Then step forward in faith, one obedient step at a time. Purpose is often discovered by walking, not just by waiting.

You were created on purpose, for a purpose. Don’t waste your life on lesser things. Discover your divine assignment and give yourself fully to it. The world needs what God put in you. Your purpose matters. You matter. Live purposefully.

Living on purpose,

 Matriarch Elnette Edwards
