Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter (Deceased)
— A TRAIL-BLAZER —
Mt. Moriah Spiritual Baptist Church
Chateaubelair, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
“Blessed are those who lay the foundation so that others may build upon it. The servant of God who plants in faith shall be remembered in the harvest of eternity.”
I. Introduction
In the rich and sacred tapestry of the Spiritual Baptist Faith in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, certain individuals rise above the ordinary to become pillars of enduring spiritual legacy. Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter, of the Mt. Moriah Spiritual Baptist Church, Chateaubelair, stands honoured among such consecrated souls. His life, rooted in unwavering devotion and selfless service, has left an indelible mark upon the Spiritual Baptist community — not only in Chateaubelair but across the length and breadth of the Vincentian landscape.

This brief, prepared by Patriarch Godfrey Gregg of The Mystical Order Ministries, under the leadership of Patriarch and Chief Apostle Sir Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson, is a humble tribute to a man of God who walked faithfully in his calling and blazed a trail that continues to illuminate the path for generations of believers.
II. Spiritual Heritage and Identity
The Spiritual Baptist Faith — sometimes called the Shouter Baptist faith — is a vibrant, indigenous expression of Christianity born of the confluence of African spiritual traditions and Christian theology on the Caribbean islands. It is a faith rooted in prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, the mourning ground, bell-ringing, and the powerful movements of the Holy Spirit. In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, this faith has produced remarkable men and women of God whose spiritual dedication has sustained communities through generations of trial and triumph.
Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter was a devoted son of this sacred tradition. He carried his title with the gravity and responsibility that it demands. The office of Pointer within the Spiritual Baptist Faith is a role of deep spiritual authority — one who is trusted to guide seekers through the mourning ground experience, interpreting divine visions and dreams, and ushering the faithful into deeper dimensions of spiritual understanding. Brother Porter embraced this sacred duty with grace, humility, and an abiding love for God and His people.
III. A Life of Faithful Service
Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter was a cornerstone of the Mt. Moriah Spiritual Baptist Church in Chateaubelair — a community nestled on the windward coast of St. Vincent. Chateaubelair, known for its mountains and resilient people, was home to a man whose spiritual stature was as towering as the surrounding landscape.
In his role as Teacher, Brother Porter invested generously in the spiritual education and nurture of his congregation. He understood that the Faith must be taught, explained, and lived — not merely professed. Through Bible instruction, testimony, and lived example, he imparted to younger members of the church the doctrines, disciplines, and divine encounters that form the bedrock of the Spiritual Baptist way of life.
As Pointer, he served as a trusted guide through the most sacred and intimate of spiritual rites. Those privileged to be pointed by him spoke of the experience with reverence — his discernment was sharp, his counsel was sound, and his spirit was attuned to the movements of the Holy Spirit. He was not a man who wielded spiritual authority carelessly. He understood that souls were entrusted to his care, and he bore that weight with pastoral tenderness.
His service extended beyond the walls of the church. He was present in the homes of the bereaved, at the bedsides of the sick, and in the counsel of those facing life’s uncertainties. He was the embodiment of servant leadership — one who counted no task beneath his calling if it served the people of God.
IV. A Trail-Blazer for the Faith
To call Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter a trail-blazer is to acknowledge the pioneering nature of his spiritual contribution. In communities such as Chateaubelair, where the Spiritual Baptist Faith has sometimes faced misunderstanding and social marginalisation, it required courage to stand unashamedly in the calling of the Faith. Brother Porter stood with his head high and his spirit anchored in the assurance of God’s commission upon his life.
He modelled what it means to pursue spiritual excellence within the Spiritual Baptist tradition — maintaining the standards of the Faith, preserving its sacred ceremonies and spiritual disciplines, and passing them on to the next generation with fidelity and care. He was not content to receive what had been handed to him and let it diminish. He nurtured, expanded, and strengthened the Faith’s presence in his community.
His trail-blazing spirit is evidenced in the legacy he left in the lives of those he mentored. Many who today walk in ministry — whether as Mothers, Nurses, Warriors, or Shepherds — can trace the roots of their spiritual formation to the nurturing influence of Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter. A trail-blazer is measured not only by where he walked but by who followed in his footsteps. By this measure, Brother Porter’s legacy is rich indeed.
V. Mt. Moriah Spiritual Baptist Church — A House of Prayer
Mt. Moriah Spiritual Baptist Church, Chateaubelair, holds a special place in the spiritual geography of St. Vincent. The very name ‘Moriah’ echoes the biblical mountain of sacrifice and encounter — a place where faith was tested, confirmed, and rewarded by divine provision. It is fitting that Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter would give his life in service to a church bearing such a name, for his life was itself a living testimony of sacrifice, encounter, and divine faithfulness.
The church he served was more than a building — it was a community of faith, a sanctuary of prayer, a training ground for spiritual development. Under the influence of leaders such as Brother Porter, Mt. Moriah became a place where the disciplines of the Spiritual Baptist Faith were practised with rigour and reverence, where the mourning ground yielded testimonies of profound transformation, and where the Spirit of God moved freely among His people.
VI. Remembering His Legacy
Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter has passed from this earthly pilgrimage, but his legacy endures with the permanence of spiritual truth. The Spiritual Baptist Faith teaches that those who die in the Lord do not truly depart — they continue their journey in the eternal realm, their lives now fully hidden with God. For those who remain, the charge is to carry forward what the departed have entrusted to our hands.
We at The Mystical Order Ministries, under the leadership of Patriarch and Chief Apostle Sir Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson, receive the mantle of remembrance with sobriety and gratitude. We honour Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter not with empty words but with the commitment to uphold the values he lived — faithfulness to the divine call, sacrificial service to the Body of Christ, the preservation of the sacred traditions of the Spiritual Baptist Faith, and the relentless pursuit of spiritual excellence.
To the congregation of Mt. Moriah Spiritual Baptist Church, to the family and loved ones of Teacher Pointer Porter, and to all who were touched by his ministry, we extend our deepest spiritual solidarity. May the God whom he served so faithfully continue to comfort you with the assurance that his labour was not in vain.
VII. A Final Tribute
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. — Matthew 25:21”
Teacher Pointer Selwyn Porter answered that divine benediction with a life well-lived. He was faithful in the classroom of the Spirit, faithful at the door of the church, faithful in the quiet moments of prayer, and faithful unto the end. He was, in the truest sense of the word, a trail-blazer — one who walked boldly into the wilderness of spiritual challenge and carved a pathway of grace so that others could follow.
Let his name be spoken with honour in the halls of faith. Let his memory be a lantern to those who journey in the Spiritual Baptist tradition. Let his life be the sermon that continues to preach long after the preacher has gone home.
Gone from our sight, but not from our memory.
Gone from our presence, but not from our hearts.
Gone from this world, but not from the household of God.
