I. Introduction

This brief has been prepared in honour and recognition of Reverend Duff Walker James, a faithful and dedicated servant of God within the Spiritual Baptist Faith. It is compiled under the authority and editorial guidance of Patriarch Godfrey Gregg of The Mystical Order Ministries International, functioning under the supreme leadership of Patriarch and Chief Apostle Sir Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson. This document seeks to chronicle the life, calling, and enduring contributions of Reverend James to the body of Christ, to the Spiritual Baptist community, and to the wider fellowship of believers.

II. Background and Early Life

Reverend Duff Walker James was raised in the rich spiritual tradition of the Spiritual Baptist Faith, a vibrant and deeply rooted Caribbean Christian movement known for its distinctive practices of prayer, fasting, mourning, and spiritual discernment. From an early age, Reverend James demonstrated an uncommon hunger for the things of God, immersing himself in Scripture, corporate worship, and the sacred disciplines that define the Spiritual Baptist way of life.

The Spiritual Baptist Faith, also known as the Shouter Baptist tradition, draws upon both African spiritual heritage and Christian theology, producing a form of worship that is fervent, communal, and prophetically alive. It was within this tradition that Reverend James received his spiritual formation, his sense of divine calling, and his commitment to a life of ministry.

III. The Call to Ministry

Reverend Duff Walker James answered the call to ministry with a spirit of humility, obedience, and resolve. Recognizing that the work of God is not entered into lightly, he submitted himself to the rigors of spiritual preparation — including the sacred mourning ritual, a cornerstone of Spiritual Baptist initiation — through which he received divine revelation and confirmation of his ministerial calling.

His ordination as a Reverend within the Spiritual Baptist Faith represents not merely an ecclesiastical appointment, but a solemn covenant between a servant and his Creator. Reverend James embraced this charge with sincerity of heart, committing himself to the proclamation of the Gospel, the shepherding of souls, and the upbuilding of the community of faith.

IV. Ministry and Service

Throughout his years in active ministry, Reverend Duff Walker James has been a steadfast pillar of the Spiritual Baptist community. His ministry is characterised by a deep commitment to prayer, a love for the Word of God, and a pastoral sensitivity that has endeared him to congregants and colleagues alike. He has served faithfully in worship leadership, counselling, teaching, and the administration of the spiritual ordinances particular to the Spiritual Baptist tradition.

Reverend James has also been a voice for unity within the broader Christian community, recognising that the Spiritual Baptist Faith does not exist in isolation, but as part of the universal body of Christ. His ecumenical spirit and gracious demeanour have made him a respected figure across denominational lines, a testament to the transforming power of genuine Christian character.

His service extends beyond the walls of the church into the wider community, where he has demonstrated a shepherd’s heart for the vulnerable, the marginalised, and those in need of spiritual direction. In so doing, he exemplifies the mandate of Christ to be salt and light in the world.

V. The Spiritual Baptist Faith: A Brief Overview

The Spiritual Baptist Faith, also widely known as the Shouter Baptist Faith, is an independent Afro-Caribbean Christian movement that originated in the Caribbean islands, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and surrounding territories. It blends elements of Protestant Christianity — particularly Methodist and Anglican traditions — with African spiritual practices, creating a distinctive liturgical and theological identity.

Among its most recognisable practices are the use of lighted candles, the wearing of white robes and head ties, bell ringing, mourning and fasting retreats, the speaking of tongues, the use of spiritual gifts, and a profound reverence for the Holy Spirit. The movement has produced extraordinary leaders, prophets, teachers, and healers who have made lasting impressions on Caribbean society and diaspora communities worldwide.

The Spiritual Baptist Faith was historically subjected to legal suppression in Trinidad and Tobago under the Shouter Prohibition Ordinance of 1917, which criminalized its practice. This ordinance was repealed in 1951, and since then, The Spiritual Baptist Faith has flourished and expanded globally. March 30 is now observed as Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day in Trinidad and Tobago, commemorating the lifting of the ban and celebrating the freedom of worship that followed.
