I. PREAMBLE — A SACRED COVENANT HONOURED
By the grace and sovereign will of Almighty God, and in accordance with the sacred duties incumbent upon the Office of the Patriarch and Presiding Prelate of The Mystical Order Ministries International, this Ecclesiastical Brief is herein formally prepared, duly researched, and solemnly issued as a permanent record of honour, remembrance, and theological recognition.
The Church of the Living God is ever called to remember her elders — those shepherds of great faithfulness who laboured in the vineyard when the way was rough, when resources were scarce, and when the faith of many was yet in its infant seasons. Among such noble servants of the Lord, the life and ministry of Patriarch Cosmore Pompey stands as a luminous and enduring testimony to the power of the Holy Spirit working through consecrated, covenant-keeping clergy.
This Brief is presented not merely as a record of death, but as a celebration of a life fully lived in sacred consecration. It is offered to the people of God, to the clergy of The Spiritual Baptist Faith, and to the wider Body of Christ throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Caribbean, and beyond — that the name, the work, and the witness of Patriarch Cosmore Pompey shall never be forgotten.
“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” — Psalm 116:15 (KJV)
II. BACKGROUND — THE MAN AND HIS FORMATION
Patriarch Cosmore Pompey was a son of the soil of St. Vincent and the Grenadines — nurtured in the rich spiritual heritage of the Eastern Caribbean, where faith is not merely professed but breathed, lived, and woven into the very fabric of daily existence. From his earliest years, he was drawn by the Spirit of God toward the deep wells of sacred devotion that distinguish The Spiritual Baptist Faith as a wholly unique and precious expression of Caribbean Christianity.
The Spiritual Baptist tradition — sometimes reverently called the Shouter Baptist Faith — is a movement born of the resilience and spiritual genius of the African-Caribbean people. Rooted in scripture, animated by the Holy Spirit, and ordered by solemn ceremonies of mourning, thanksgiving, and consecration, this Faith produced in Patriarch Cosmore Pompey a minister of extraordinary depth and commitment. He grew in grace. He grew in knowledge. He grew in holiness. And in due season, the Lord exalted him to the office of Patriarch — the highest honour within the cathedral structure of the Faith.
“The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.” — Psalm 110:4 (KJV)
III. THE PATRIARCHAL OFFICE AND SACRED STATION
In the polity of The Spiritual Baptist Faith, the office of Patriarch is not lightly conferred. It is the product of years of faithful service, spiritual discipline, moral uprightness, and demonstrated capacity for governance in the things of God. A Patriarch is a father of the Church — a spiritual architect whose authority flows from above, whose character is tested through the fires of ministry, and whose heart is enlarged for the flock entrusted to his care.
Patriarch Cosmore Pompey was called and set apart to this high office with the full authority of his ecclesiastical heritage. He bore the responsibilities of the Patriarchal station with quiet dignity, principled leadership, and a shepherd’s heart. His word carried weight not because he demanded it, but because he lived worthy of it. His presence in the assembly commanded reverence not through force, but through the unmistakable fragrance of a life consecrated to God.
IV. ST. MARY’S SPIRITUAL BAPTIST CATHEDRAL, OVERLAND
The Cathedral of St. Mary’s Spiritual Baptist Cathedral at Overland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, stands as a house of prayer, a place of proclamation, and a sanctuary of the Spirit. Under the patriarchal oversight of Patriarch Cosmore Pompey, this Cathedral was more than a building — it was a living congregation, a praying people, a gathering of souls knit together by covenant and sacred fellowship.
Through years of faithful stewardship, Patriarch Pompey guided his congregation with wisdom and pastoral care. He administered the sacraments with reverence. He opened the scriptures with clarity. He preserved the traditions of the Faith while welcoming the movement of the Holy Spirit in each season of the cathedral’s life. The congregation of St. Mary’s was shaped, sustained, and spiritually enriched by his presence at their helm.
The Cathedral at Overland now stands as a monument not only to the living God it glorifies, but also to the Patriarch who gave so much of his life’s energy in its service. His legacy is embedded in the souls of the men and women who sat under his ministry, who heard his prayers, and who were shepherded by his faithful hand through seasons of joy and sorrow alike.
“For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” — 1 Corinthians 3:9 (KJV)
V. THE SPIRITUAL BAPTIST FAITH — A SACRED HERITAGE
The Spiritual Baptist Faith is one of the distinctive religious movements to emerge from the Caribbean, particularly from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados. It is a tradition that defied colonial suppression — notably the Shouter Prohibition Ordinance of 1917 in Trinidad and Tobago, which attempted to silence the drums, the bells, and the prayers of a people who refused to relinquish their encounter with God. That they prevailed is itself a testimony to the Spirit’s sovereign movement.
The Faith holds the Holy Bible as its supreme authority. It incorporates practices of mourning — a form of spiritual retreat for divine revelation and commissioning — alongside thanksgiving, christenings, prayer meetings, harvest festivals, and the solemn rites of ordination and elevation. The wearing of distinctive robes in colours that correspond to spiritual offices is a visible witness to the sacred order that governs the community of the Faith.
Patriarch Cosmore Pompey was a custodian and champion of this heritage. He understood that to serve the Spiritual Baptist Faith was to stand in a long and honourable line of men and women who, against considerable odds, kept the fire burning. He did his part. He kept his watch. He passed the torch.
“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.” — Jeremiah 6:16 (KJV)
VI. MINISTERIAL CHARACTER AND SPIRITUAL WITNESS
A Man of Prayer
Those who knew Patriarch Cosmore Pompey well speak uniformly of a man whose prayer life was the foundation of all that he did. He prayed before he led. He prayed before he preached. He prayed before he decided. In the secret place of the Most High, he found the strength and direction that sustained a ministry touching many lives across many years. Prayer was not a religious exercise to him — it was the very breath of his being.
A Man of the Word
Patriarch Pompey was a servant of the scriptures. He held the King James Bible with the reverence due to the living Word of God, and from its sacred pages he drew the nourishment that fed his flock week after week, season after season. He preached with conviction. He taught with patience. He corrected with love. And always, always, he pointed his people back to the Word as the final and infallible authority for faith and practice.
A Man of Holy Order
In the administration of his cathedral and the governance of the Faith, Patriarch Cosmore Pompey was a man of order. He understood that God is not the author of confusion but of peace, and he ordered the affairs of St. Mary’s Spiritual Baptist Cathedral accordingly. Ceremonies were conducted with dignity. Protocols were observed with faithfulness. Appointments were made with discernment. The house of God was maintained as a place of reverence and holy purpose.
A Man of Compassion
Beyond the pulpit and the administrative responsibilities of his office, Patriarch Pompey was known as a shepherd with a heart of genuine compassion. He visited the sick. He comforted the bereaved. He counselled the troubled. He welcomed the stranger. In him, the flock of St. Mary’s saw not a distant religious officer but a father who genuinely cared for each soul committed to his charge. His was a ministry not of titles alone, but of selfless and Spirit-led service.
“He that is greatest among you shall be your servant.” — Matthew 23:11 (KJV)
VII. HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE WIDER COMMUNITY
The ministry of Patriarch Cosmore Pompey extended beyond the walls of St. Mary’s Spiritual Baptist Cathedral. He was known throughout the community of Overland and the wider Vincentian society as a man of God whose integrity was beyond question and whose influence for righteousness was a stabilising force in the social fabric of the community.
He participated in the broader fellowship of The Spiritual Baptist Faith across St. Vincent and the Grenadines, attending convocations and gatherings of the wider Body. He lent his voice, his prayers, and his presence to the common cause of advancing the Gospel and uplifting the spiritual standard of the Caribbean Church. He was a builder of bridges, a healer of divisions, and a promoter of unity where unity was possible without the compromise of truth.
The young men and women who passed through his care carry forward a living legacy. Many who found their calling to ministry under his watch now serve congregations, counsel families, and shape communities of their own. In them, Patriarch Cosmore Pompey continues to live — not in sentiment alone, but in the active, Spirit-filled service that he modelled and inspired.
VIII. THE PASSING OF A PATRIARCH
The departure of Patriarch Cosmore Pompey from this earthly pilgrimage marked a solemn moment in the life of St. Mary’s Spiritual Baptist Cathedral, in the community of Overland, and indeed in the wider fellowship of The Spiritual Baptist Faith across St. Vincent and the Grenadines. When a patriarch falls asleep in the Lord, the Church does not mourn as those without hope — for we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord — but she does pause. She remembers. She honours. She gives thanks.
The life of Patriarch Cosmore Pompey was a full life — full of faith, full of prayer, full of service, full of sacrifice. He did not retire from the purposes of God; he was promoted by the God he served. The crown that he earnestly sought, the righteousness that he laboured to model, and the hope that animated his daily walk — these were not in vain. They were received. They were rewarded. And in the courts of the Eternal, where the redeemed of the Lord gather in the fullness of glory, Patriarch Cosmore Pompey now stands — not as a labourer exhausted by the field, but as a servant welcomed by his Master.
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” — Matthew 25:21 (KJV)
IX. ECCLESIASTICAL RECOGNITION BY THE MYSTICAL ORDER
The Mystical Order Ministries International, under the Supreme Leadership of His Excellency Sir Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson, extends its fullest ecclesiastical recognition to the life, ministry, and heavenly reward of Patriarch Cosmore Pompey. Though he ministered within the sacred traditions of The Spiritual Baptist Faith, his witness belongs to the whole Church of the Lord Jesus Christ — and as such, The Mystical Order counts it both a privilege and a sacred duty to honour his memory in this formal Brief.
Patriarch and Presiding Prelate Sir Godfrey Gregg, who has prepared this Brief, does so with profound personal and ecclesiastical esteem for the office and the man. The office of Patriarch is one that Sir Godfrey himself bears, and he therefore understands, with the intimacy of shared vocation, the weight of the responsibilities that Patriarch Cosmore Pompey carried. It is with that understanding — and with the deepest respect — that he places this document before the people of God as a lasting tribute.
Archbishop and Presiding Prelate Hon. Andres B. Quow, whose careful and diligent research has furnished the scholarly foundations of this Brief, has rendered invaluable service to the preservation of ecclesiastical memory. The Church owes a debt of gratitude to all who labour to ensure that its servants are honoured, its history is recorded, and its legacy is faithfully transmitted to generations yet unborn.
“Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.” — Hebrews 13:7 (KJV)
X. FORMAL TRIBUTE AND BENEDICTION
To the congregation of St. Mary’s Spiritual Baptist Cathedral, Overland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, The Mystical Order Ministries International speaks these words of comfort and charge: You were blessed beyond measure to have been shepherded by Patriarch Cosmore Pompey. The years of his ministry among you were not ordinary years — they were years of divine investment, sacred formation, and covenant faithfulness. Carry what he gave you. Guard what he built. And when the enemy of your soul tempts you to forget the standards he kept, return to the altar, return to the Word, and return to the God whom your Patriarch served so faithfully unto the end.
To the clergy and leadership of The Spiritual Baptist Faith across St. Vincent and the Grenadines, The Mystical Order says: In Patriarch Cosmore Pompey, your Faith produced one of its finest sons. His life is evidence that the traditions you guard and the God you worship are real, active, and able to form ministers of extraordinary grace. Be encouraged. Carry forward the torch.
To the wider Body of Christ throughout the Caribbean and the nations: a patriarch has gone to his reward, and Heaven is richer for his presence. Let his memory call us all to greater faithfulness, deeper consecration, and more fervent prayer — that when our time comes to pass from labour to reward, we too may hear those incomparable words: Well done.
