The Mystical Order of Spiritual Baptist Inc. was established in 2012 by a group of devoted individuals seeking a spiritual community rooted in the Spiritual Baptist faith. The founders, including Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson, Godfrey Gregg, and Patricia Hackshaw, began by connecting through discussions about their faith and experiences, eventually merging their groups in Brooklyn and Rochester. They held phone meetings, gradually growing their fellowship, and later decided to formalize their community.
Key milestones in the Order’s history include:
- Formal Registration: In February 2012, the Mystical Order of Spiritual Baptist Inc. was officially registered in Brooklyn, New York.
- Leadership Structure: The initial election saw Darrindel Hoyte-Johnson as Archbishop and Apostolic Head, Godfrey Gregg as Divine Secretary/Treasurer and Bishop, and Patricia Hackshaw as Abbess. Trustees were appointed to serve a two-year term, subject to renewal at the third annual meeting.
- Expansion and Formalization: By 2012, the Order had received many new ministers and passed its Rules and Bylaws. In May 2012, Abbess Patricia Hackshaw was elevated to Queen Abbess, Bishop Gregg became Senior Bishop and Administrator, and in October 2012, Archbishop Darrin was elevated to Patriarch and Presiding Prelate, leading to further senior appointments.
- Growth and Outreach: The Order grew to include affiliate churches in England, St. Croix, Trinidad and Tobago, and membership in other countries such as St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, and Canada.
- Rituals and Community Projects: The group developed a minister’s manual, began work on a songbook, and launched outreach projects like email ministry, demonstrating ongoing efforts to nurture spiritual growth and community engagement.
The Mystical Order’s teachings emphasize spirituality rooted in Christian doctrine and Afro-Caribbean traditions, and it stands as an example of the ongoing evolution and adaptation of Spiritual Baptist faith communities in the diaspora.

Spiritual Baptist faith itself is a syncretic Afro-Caribbean religion blending Christianity with traditional African religious practices, particularly prominent in former British West Indies such as Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Mystical Order arises from and contributes to this vibrant legacy of blended belief and community.
