Guided by Her Eminence, Queen Abbess Dr. Patricia Hackshaw
Blessings and grace to you, cherished members of the flock. In our pursuit of God, we often emphasize the intellectual understanding of Scripture, which is good and necessary. Yet, the deeper journey of faith invites us into a different dimension of knowing—a knowing of the heart. This is the realm of divine wisdom, which transcends mere information and becomes a transformative, living reality within us.
The Psalmist cries out, “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.” (Psalm 86:11). This prayer captures the essence of the wisdom that Her Eminence, Queen Abbess Dr. Patricia Hackshaw, so powerfully embodies and teaches. It is a wisdom that begins not in the head, but in a heart that is wholly surrendered and “undivided” in its devotion to God. An undivided heart is not wrestling between loyalty to God and allegiance to the world, but is single-mindedly fixed on loving and obeying Him.

This heart-wisdom is what the book of Proverbs describes as the principal thing. “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:7). This wisdom is not primarily about knowing what to do, but knowing Who to trust. It is a relational, intuitive understanding of the heart of God. It is the wisdom that guided Mary to sit at the feet of Jesus, choosing the “one thing needed” over a frenzy of activity (Luke 10:42).
How do we cultivate this wisdom? We must create quiet spaces in our lives to simply behold Him. We must move beyond just reading the Word to allowing the Word to read us, to search the depths of our hearts and align them with His. It is in the secret place of prayer and contemplation that our divided affections are healed and our hearts become one. As we open the eyes of our heart (Ephesians 1:18), we begin to perceive His guidance not as a loud command, but as a gentle whisper, a deep knowing, a peace that rules in our hearts (Colossians 3:15). Seek this wisdom above all else, for it is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
Amen.
