✦ A MESSAGE OF LIBERATION ✦
On the Occasion of
SPIRITUAL BAPTIST LIBERATION DAY
May 21st
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
To All the Faithful of the Spiritual Baptist Community, the People of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Brethren Throughout the World:
Grace, Peace, and the Power of the Most High God be upon every one of you on this most sacred and triumphant day — the celebration of Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day, the Twenty-First day of May.
On behalf of the Patriarchal Council and the entire brotherhood and sisterhood of The Mystical Order Ministries International, I rise — with a heart full of gratitude, a spirit anchored in faith, and a voice lifted in holy remembrance — to extend greetings of joy, reverence, and solidarity to the Spiritual Baptist faithful in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and across the diaspora.
I. A DAY OF HOLY REMEMBRANCE
We pause on this day to honour the memory of those who came before us — the faithful men and women of the Spiritual Baptist tradition who endured unspeakable persecution, who were stripped of their right to worship freely, and who were silenced by the cruel weight of colonial oppression. The Shouter Prohibition Ordinance of 1917 was not merely a law — it was a declaration of war against a people’s soul, an attempt to extinguish the sacred flame that God Himself had lit within us.
They were ridiculed. They were imprisoned. They were beaten and bound. Yet they could not be broken — for the Spirit of the Living God does not submit to the edicts of men. In secret, in silence, on hillsides and in humble dwellings, our forebears kept the faith alive. They rang no bells, they tied no heads in public view, yet the inner bells of their conviction rang louder than any oppressor could silence.
II. THE GIFT OF LIBERATION
On the Twenty-First day of May, 1951, the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines did what justice and righteousness demanded — the Shouter Prohibition Ordinance was repealed, and the Spiritual Baptist community was granted the freedom to worship according to the dictates of their conscience and the calling of their God. On that day, chains were broken. On that day, the people breathed again. On that day, the Kingdom of Heaven was declared open to all — not merely in the hereafter, but in the here and now.
We are forever grateful to the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for this act of liberation, and we honour the legacy of all those who advocated, petitioned, and persevered until justice was served. May Saint Vincent and the Grenadines continue to be a beacon of religious freedom, cultural dignity, and national pride.
III. A FAITH THAT COULD NOT BE SILENCED
The Spiritual Baptist faith is not a borrowed tradition — it is a living testimony. It is the convergence of African spiritual inheritance, New World experience, and the fire of the Holy Spirit moving through a people determined to encounter God on their own terms. Our worship — the bells, the mourning ground, the pilgrimages, the spiritual journeys, the sacred colours, the lighted candles — all of it speaks of a covenant between a people and their Creator that no ordinance, no prison cell, and no act of colonial arrogance could dissolve.
We are proud of who we are. We are proud of where we come from. We carry our history not as a burden but as a breastplate — a testament to our resilience, our dignity, and our unshakeable trust in God Almighty.
IV. A CALL TO THE PRESENT GENERATION
As we celebrate Liberation Day, we must not allow this observance to become merely ceremonial. To the young people of the faith, I say: know your history. Understand what was sacrificed so that you might freely lift your voice in worship. Let not the freedoms won by the blood, sweat, and prayers of your ancestors be taken lightly or surrendered in a generation of apathy.
To all members of the Spiritual Baptist community worldwide, I charge you: stand firm in your identity. Walk proudly in your tradition. Engage your communities with love, with service, and with the testimony of a faith that has been tested in the fire and found worthy. Let this Liberation Day renew your commitment to unity, to worship, and to the advancement of our spiritual heritage.
And to The Mystical Order Ministries International, our Patriarchal Council, our members, our clergy, and all our brethren in every nation: let us rededicate ourselves to the sacred calling that binds us — to walk in righteousness, to minister with love, and to keep the torch of this glorious tradition burning bright for generations yet to come.
V. A WORD OF BLESSING
May the God of our liberation, the One who heard the cries of a suffering people and moved in the hearts of men to bring forth justice, continue to bless the nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. May He bless her government, her people, her shores, and her skies. May the Spiritual Baptist community everywhere know His peace, His power, and His abiding presence.
On this Liberation Day, as we ring the bells and raise our voices in praise, may the echo of our worship rise like incense before the throne of Heaven — a holy memorial to those who suffered, a joyful anthem for those who are free, and a living hope for all who shall come after us.
We are free. We were always destined to be free.
