Day 12 – March 27: Guarding Against Division
“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” – Romans 16:17
While we must pursue unity with passion, we must also guard against division with vigilance. Not everyone who enters a church community comes with pure motives. Some, whether consciously or unconsciously, sow seeds of discord. Paul warns us to be aware of such people and to take decisive action to protect the body.
Divisive people often appear spiritual and concerned. They couch their criticism in “prayer requests” and frame their gossip as “sharing concerns.” They claim to speak truth but do so without love, leaving destruction in their wake. They question leadership not to seek understanding but to undermine authority. They major in minors, creating controversy over peripheral issues while ignoring weightier matters.
This doesn’t mean we should be suspicious of everyone or silence legitimate concerns. Healthy churches have channels for addressing issues appropriately. But there’s a vast difference between someone who approaches leadership privately with a sincere concern and someone who spreads their opinions broadly to gather support for their position.
As members of The Mystical Order Ministries, we each bear responsibility for protecting our unity. This means refusing to entertain divisive conversations. It means directing people to speak with leadership rather than with you about leadership. It means choosing not to be a conduit for gossip or complaint. Sometimes protecting unity requires the courage to confront divisive behaviour lovingly but firmly.
Unity is too precious to leave unguarded. It is a treasure worth protecting with wisdom, discernment, and, when necessary, bold action.
Prayer Focus: Pray for discernment to recognize and wisdom to address any divisive influences in our ministry while maintaining a spirit of love.
