THE GARMENT OF PRAISE

Guided by His Holiness, Patriarch and Presiding Prelate Sir Godfrey Gregg

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour. There is a divine exchange available to every believer, a spiritual transaction that can transform the atmosphere of our hearts. The prophet Isaiah, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, declares a powerful mandate from God: “…to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” (Isaiah 61:3).

His Holiness, Sir Godfrey Gregg, frequently illuminates this scripture, teaching us that praise is not merely a reaction to favourable circumstances; it is a weapon of spiritual warfare. It is a “garment” we choose to put on, much like we select our clothes each day. A spirit of despair—of heaviness, discouragement, and hopelessness—will seek to clothe us in its oppressive weight. But God has provided a replacement: the vibrant, light-filled garment of praise.

When we feel overwhelmed by the ashes of disappointment or the mourning of loss, the enemy whispers that we have no reason to praise. Yet, it is in those very moments that our praise becomes most powerful. We are not praising God for the ashes, but we are praising God despite them, affirming His character as Healer, Redeemer, and Comforter. This act of faith initiates the divine exchange. As we open our mouths in thanksgiving and adoration, we are actively taking off the spirit of despair and putting on the garment of praise.

This is a deliberate act of the will, rooted in the truth of who God is. The Psalmist commands his own soul: “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.” (Psalm 103:1). He instructs his inner man to engage in worship, regardless of his feelings. Today, if you feel the weight of despair seeking to settle upon you, make a conscious decision to clothe yourself in praise. Sing a hymn, recite a Psalm, declare the goodness of God aloud. As you do, you will feel the heavy spirit flee, and the oil of joy will begin to flow, anointing you with strength and gladness. Put on your garment today.

Amen.
