THE FELLOWSHIP OF SUFFERING

Guided by His Holiness, Patriarch and Presiding Prelate Sir Godfrey Gregg

Greetings in the name of our Suffering Servant, Jesus Christ. The world teaches us to avoid pain at all costs, to seek comfort and ease. Yet, the Christian walk presents a paradoxical and profound truth: there is a sacred fellowship to be found in suffering. The Apostle Paul expressed a deep desire to “know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.” (Philippians 3:10).

His Holiness, Sir Godfrey Gregg, with great pastoral wisdom, reminds us that suffering is not a sign of God’s absence or displeasure. For the believer, it can be a sacred gateway into a deeper, more intimate knowledge of our Lord. When we suffer for righteousness’ sake, or when we endure the refining fires of trials, we are granted the profound privilege of sharing in the very experiences of Christ. We taste, in a small measure, the cup He drank for us. This does not remove the pain, but it infuses it with eternal purpose and divine companionship.

In this fellowship, we are never alone. We have a High Priest who can empathize with our weaknesses, one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin (Hebrews 4:15). Your pain, your rejection, your sorrow—He understands it all. Furthermore, our suffering produces in us perseverance, character, and a hope that does not disappoint (Romans 5:3-5). It is the furnace that burns away the dross of self-reliance and reveals the pure gold of faith.

If you are walking through a valley of suffering today, do not despair. You have been invited into a sacred fellowship. Cling to the Man of Sorrows, who is acquainted with grief. Let your suffering draw you closer to His heart, and allow it to produce in you a Christlike character that could be formed in no other way. Your trial is not wasted; it is a tool in the hands of a loving God, shaping you into the image of His Son.

Amen.
