THE CANAANITE WOMAN

HH, Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div

Never Give Up

As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. — Isaiah 62:5

Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment. Matthew 15:28
Word was out. A Jewish healer was here in Gentile territory. And no matter what it took, she was going to hunt him down. Normally she wouldn’t have been so pushy, so absolutely desperate. But she remembered her daughter’s cries, small arms lashing out, hair in dark tangles against her head—possessed by a demon!
This woman would do anything to get help. Barging into the house where Jesus was, she begged for help. Jesus’ disciples urged him to show the frantic woman the exit, but instead, Jesus gave this cryptic reply: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” And this woman was for sure a non-Israelite.
There was a Freeze.
What?! What did the Lord mean? That all non-Jews were out of luck? That he didn’t care about this woman’s need? Or was he testing her?
Rather than head for the door, the woman persisted. No giving up, no turning back. She knew that in front of her stood her only hope, so she scrambled quickly for a reply. She suggested she would be glad to take just his leftovers or the “crumbs” from the table.
That was the right answer. Jesus was waiting for an expression of wholehearted faith in him. Jesus wanted to know that this woman believed that even an ounce of his attention and power would solve her problems. So Jesus granted her request, and her daughter was instantly healed.
Have you ever done this? Thrown everything to the wind and begged the Lord to solve your problem instead of trying to do it on your own? Most women tend to hold on to their pride, to work hard to find their own solutions. But try as we might, only one solution satisfies: Jesus. He will help us through any problem, no matter how big or small. It’s a promise given to women who comes to God with faith.
Lord Jesus, I’m used to handling my problems on my own. But, like the Canaanite woman, I need to turn to you for help. Show me how to humble my heart, and teach me to trust you more and more. Amen.
