Day 5 – March 20: The Oil of Unity
“It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments.” – Psalm 133:2
The psalmist compares unity to the sacred anointing oil that was poured upon Aaron’s head during his consecration as high priest. This oil was precious, costly, and specifically formulated according to God’s instructions. It wasn’t a common substance but something set apart for holy purposes. So it is with genuine unity—it is precious, costly, and divinely ordained.
Notice the progression described in this verse: the oil begins at the head and flows downward, eventually covering Aaron’s entire garment. This teaches us a profound truth about unity—it must begin with leadership and flow downward through every level of the body. When leaders model unity, humility, and mutual honour, it creates a culture where unity can flourish throughout the entire congregation.
But also notice that unity, like that oil, is messy and all-encompassing. It gets on everything. It’s visible. It’s tangible. You can’t fake it or hide its absence. When true unity exists in a church, visitors can feel it the moment they walk through the door. When it’s absent, no amount of programs or productions can substitute for it.
The anointing oil also served a specific purpose—it sanctified and empowered for service. Unity does the same for the body of Christ. When we stand together in genuine harmony, we are sanctified, set apart as a testimony to the world, and empowered to accomplish what would be impossible individually.
Let unity cover our ministry like that precious oil, from our leadership to every member, visible to all who encounter us.
