THE MINISTRY OF PRESENCE

Cherished Members of Our Sacred Fellowship,

In a world obsessed with doing, achieving, and producing, I wish to remind you today of the profound spiritual practice of simply being. We live in an age that measures worth by productivity, that values action over contemplation, that asks “What did you accomplish?” before “Who are you becoming?” But the mystical path invites us to a different understanding—one where presence itself is a form of ministry.

When you sit in meditation, you are not wasting time that could be spent on more “productive” activities. You are cultivating inner peace that will radiate outward to everyone you encounter. When you pause to truly listen to another person, giving them your full attention without planning your response or checking your phone, you are offering them a gift more valuable than gold—the gift of being truly seen and heard. When you stand in your garden or walk in nature, simply appreciating the beauty of creation without any agenda, you are participating in the divine act of witnessing and blessing the world.

Our culture has trained us to believe that we must always be doing something, fixing something, improving something. This addiction to activity leaves us exhausted, scattered, and disconnected from our deeper selves. But consider the great mystics of all traditions—they spent hours in silent contemplation, not because they were lazy or avoiding responsibility, but because they understood that being precedes doing, that who we are determines the quality of what we accomplish.

I observe with concern how many of you are stretching yourselves too thin, saying yes to every request, filling every moment with activity, running from one commitment to another with barely a breath in between. This is not sustainable, nor is it what the Divine asks of you. You cannot pour from an empty cup. You cannot give what you have not received. You cannot lead others to peace if you yourself are perpetually agitated.

I give you permission—no, I implore you—to practice the ministry of presence. Create sacred spaces in your day where you do nothing but be. Resist the guilt that may arise, recognizing it as a cultural conditioning rather than spiritual truth. Understand that in these moments of quiet presence, you are not being selfish or unproductive. You are connecting with the source of all true productivity. You are allowing yourself to be filled so that you can overflow into the lives of others.

Your presence matters. Your being matters. You matter, not for what you do but for who you are.

In peaceful contemplation,

Your Patriarch Gregg
