HH, Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div
Self-control is definitely not one of our favourite topics. It is so painful to say no to ourselves, isn’t it?
By allowing God to cultivate this character trait within us, we reap great rewards. For example, when we say no to the second helping of mashed potatoes, tomorrow we will be glad when our pants still fit. And when we decide to forego that thirty-minute sitcom, the next morning we will be rejoicing when we feel rested for the day.
On the other hand, when we fail to set limitations on ourselves, we reap the negative effects. How many of us have lost our tempers, only minutes later to regret the pain and shame it brought us and others? And who hasn’t winced in pain when * that overdraft notice from the bank came in the mail, We’ve all been there!
Instead of seeing self-control as a deprivation, we just need to change our thinking. We need to realize all the benefits it affords us. God wants us to have happy, fulfilled lives, and He knows that reigning ourselves in sometimes is the only ~ way to achieve that. Say no to Yourself today!
