HH, Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div
Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3
The apostle James very directly addressed the issue of unwholesome talk when he wrote, “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless” (James 1:26 NIV)*
“The Bible is filled with admonitions to speak only words that please God, including David’s words in the above verse. David clearly didn’t want the same mouth that spoke praises to God to be used to say wicked, foolish things.
Jesus perfectly diagnosed the problem of unholy, unedifying talk when He said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” Luke 6:45
For you to control your tongue, you’ll have to first address the issue of what’s in your heart, You can do that by daily surrendering Your thoughts and Your speech to the control of the Holy Spirit.
Lord, work in my heart through Your Holy Spirit so that the words I speak will always glorify You and build others up in their faith –
