The veil that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies was not a thin veil at all. It was a very thick, heavy curtain without separation. In other words, it was one solid panel.
The only way to enter behind the veil was to through the side where the veil ended. There was no way to enter otherwise.
When Jesus died on the cross, the Bible tells us in Matthew 27:51
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split (NIV)
