Be still and know that I am God is a statement we often hear especially in church. I just want to touch a little on this subject of prayer. A pleasant good morning to my brothers and sisters in the Lord.
Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always pray, and not to faint.
Jesus urged his disciples to always pray and faint not—no matter how bad things may be, or may be getting, men ought to always pray and not give up. A number of things happen when one sincerely prays believing that as far as God is concerned, the door is never closed.
The very first thing prayer does is to bring our will in line with God’s will—I have found that when I pray, if what I am praying about is not God’s will; that the very words that I speak to him seem not to register with me, and if they do not register with me then they do not register with God.
When this happens you know that your will is not in line with God’s will, and someone have got to move; God is not going to move, so you must move to his will. Well I prayed my prayer, I said to him what I truly felt, and I don’t know anything else to say—but it didn’t register.
Now the human alternative is to give up, to stop trying, to stop praying—but Jesus said men ought always pray and faint not—if you do not pray, the alternative is to faint, to give up, to stop seeking the will of God.
Well how do I pray, when I have said all I know to say? “ Jesus told us about vain repetitions in our prayers.” If it does not register with you stop.
How do I seek the will of God if I have run out of words, and if I still don’t know what his will is for me in this situation?
God speaks in Isaiah 46:10 and said: Be still and know that I am God—in other words if the words are not registering, hush, be quiet, be still, and my will shall be seen, heard, and felt, and you don’t have to do any thing but be still, and wait on me.
Stop directing the thoughts, stop dictating the outcome, be still and know that I am God. Now you cannot be still in times of trouble unless your faith is in God. Faith in God draws you into the center of God’s will, and in the center of his will, you can be still, for you know that “ God is.”
You don’t have to say anything, you don’t have to have any thoughts, for his thoughts will become your thoughts, his will, shall become your will, and his ways shall become your ways.
His thoughts are higher than your thoughts, and his ways are higher than your ways; but if you be still and know that he is God; you will have the exact same relationship with him as the angels, and as the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now this is not conjecture, it is fact—I have tried it, and it works; but it is difficult to stay on that high plane for great sweeps of time— and that is what life is here in an earthly body; it is one great sweep of time—and fear, and human nature stalks that sweep of time for everybody, and it is exceedingly hard to always remember to be still and know that he is God—and it is hard to stay aligned with God when fear is at its worst—so we faint, we give up, we lose heart.
All of this taught me why God is God—he understands all of this, he sees our human nature, “while he has no fear,” he understands our fear, and he knows that fear makes us doubt him at times—but he does not hold our doubt against us; he still treats us as he treats the angels, we cant understand that—he loves, us and honors us even at our weakest moments, at our most disgusting times he still loves us—that’s why he is God.
When I can’t stand myself because of my sin he draws me ever closer to his bosom, and he tells me I am still his child, and then he sets about cleansing and renewing my spirit and making preparation for my return unto him—that’s why he is God, no other being can love the least of these like God does. And I was once one of the least of these, and so were you.
