This morning I want to thank God for His mercy and the cross. My brothers and sisters in the Lord there is a way which seemeth right unto a man but the end thereof is the way of death. I wanna show you how sin came through the first Adam and through the second Adam there is a way of escape for the sin. Hence my message to you this morning “Only one way out.”
Let us turn to the Book of Romans chapter 3:19-26 (NIV)
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. 21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Have you ever seen a movie where the main character is being pursued by the bad guys, gets trapped in an alley, and there is seemingly no way out? And then, hooray, some nearly miraculous way of escape suddenly appears! And our hero emerges unscathed! I have and it was like wow. How did that happened and if, man can do it how much more can our Father do for us.
Well, that’s exactly the kind of picture the apostle Paul paints. He demonstrates with great forcefulness that every human being on the planet is trapped by his own sin and falls under God’s judgment. No amount of good works or following the law will enable us to escape condemnation. It seems like there is no way out. However, if you walk within the path that God has ordained for us, He will make a way of escape for us. This is our way moment for a great way out of the darkness into the marvelous light.
But then, suddenly, a way of escape emerges. And the only way out is the cross. By sending his Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins, God provides the only way out from the righteous condemnation of God. He loves us so much that he actually poured out the punishment (due us) on his own Son! Let me ask you if you a simple question. When you are confronted with the castigation of your fellow brethren, do you remember the cross? Do you ever STOP to think of the goodness of God how He saved you from the wrath of a burning pit of hell? Beloved there is a way of escape for all of us and if you’re not carful you can be trapped in the same mess.
In doing so, God not only demonstrates his great love for us, but also completely satisfies the demand for justice against our sin. So, the cross is the greatest point of both love and judgment that there will ever be. The two come crashing together at the cross. My brothers and sisters in the Lord this is something for us to consider and see what are our true purposes in this life.
Have you taken the only way out? Have you fully trusted in Jesus’ death to deliver you from the penalty of sin? If you have, pause to thank God for his amazing love. If not, don’t wait another moment. It’s your only way of escape!
