Sir Dr. Godfrey Gregg

1 Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted, above that he is able: but will with the temptation also make a way of escape, that he may be able to bear it.”    We were born sinners and it seems often to be easier to disobey God than to follow His Word to victory. The tragedy of the Christian downfall is greatly affected by the many influences of temptation, that is everywhere around us. Yet, the believer can avoid the temptations and experience the joy of walking closer with God.
Let us examine a few things and see where we fit in and the possibility of avoiding the temptations.
1 Corinthians 10:12 “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”

There is a clear warning. When you are not on guard in a careless moment, thinking all is well, let me warn you BEAWARE. If, ever you think you are above temptation you are going to fall into it. Be watchful, sober and diligent in your daily walk of life. Diligence will go a long way to keep you walking straight.

Once you have established the source of danger and the author of it, your duty is to take a stand against it. The devil is the source of temptation and his reason is to steal, kill and destroy. There is established scripture to guide us along this path. Hear what James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” We will never gain victory in our own strength. Our character must be strong to overcome the temptations or we can ruin ourselves fighting in our own strength.

11 Timothy 2:22 “Flee youthful lusts,”  when the young man Joseph was invited by the lustful woman to sin, he fled, leaving his coat behind. This is a great example for the young men and women today and more so believers. When we are tempted unto sin make us steadfast wise and strong. As I wrote to you in the past, if the courtship, relationship or companionship is not working then it is time to leave and take the next step to fellowship with Jesus. It is time for you to leave the party, break up the date, and take control of your surroundings.  Take my advice today and leave the circle, group and avoid the situation where you are tempted. God will never ask you to do something where there is no escape. I urge you today to look for the exit from anything and anyone that is capable of bringing you down. You don’t have to fall and grieve the Spirit of God or throw yourselves into a state of depression.  I ask of you today to walk away and keep the peace of God.

We have an advocate with the Father and it is easy for us to make the wrong right. 1 John 1:9 tells us and this is reassurance to the believer “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  Don’t blame your failure on others, or the trying times, and say you couldn’t help it. My beloved ministers in this Noble Mystical Order we are to be the examples to our surroundings.  The people we live with and share space. Our speech, actions and as I always emphasize behaviour, all must be in line with the word of God. I promise you that I will step aside if I cannot meet the obligations of the office I hold. Whenever we fail it is time to look to the Lord who knows about our weakness and ask for forgiveness without delay. When we get dirty on the job we often clean up before we sit at the table to eat of jump in bed. We cannot allow the stains of temptation defeats to hang around and pollute us. We have to understand the God that we are serving.

Always remember Jude 24 “He is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.” It is so sad to hear believers say they cannot avoid the temptations.  Someone gets blame for our behaviour.  All these things the word of God tells us we are more than conqueror if we are rooted in Christ Jesus. No matter the circumstances we can live above the temptations. “When I am tempted unto sin, make me know that Thou can save.” This is what Paul wrote the Church in Philippi “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.” Whatever it is that is trying to defeat you is powerless before the Mighty God. Lean on Him, trust in His power, and refuse all that tears you down and tempt you to do evil.

1 John 2:1 “My little children, these things I write unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous“ You notice the word said “little children” and not Bishop, Cardinal, Archbishop, Queen Abbess, Patriarch or some other title but “little children”. We are in the world, but do not have to be of it. We can live above its putrefying atmosphere but we have to try. You have the will to become anything you want. Just find your lane and stay there. The Lord will make a way where there is no way. If you are not sure, look at the children of Israel when they came to the Red Sea.  The will of God will not take you if the Grace of God will not protect you.

The Church, the believer, Ministers, brothers and sisters of this Noble and Worthy Mystical Order. Brothers and sisters do not have to participate in the evil around you. You can turn off the undesirable television programs and the worldly music and replace it with something that will benefit the soul. It is best to substitute all the evil things that hurt you with Spiritual things that will benefit your soul. God should be always glorified with the things we do. This is what Paul wrote to the Church in Philippians 4:8 “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Hallelujah.  You must always have good thoughts that with flush out the bad thoughts from your daily life. Rid yourselves of negative company and replace with positive attitudes. Replace sinners with Christians and let God get the honour and the glory. Build a shield around you to stare off temptations.

We must not live in a cage, but choose wisely whom we associate with in this life. You know the saying that “if you play with the pups you get bitten by the fleas.” Let me quote what David said in Psalm 119:63 “I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts”. Turn with me to Exodus 23:2 and we read “thou shall not follow a multitude to do evil.” I will be very cautious here with my comments and let you seek God for the understanding.  However, I will add some seasoning here from the book of 11 Corinthians 6:14 “Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness”? We should always make a good impression to others and remember they are making one on us. Many people lost their standard on a date, many marriages end in divorce because it lacked the oneness with God. We should not isolate ourselves but insulate ourselves against the evil and temptations. If you really love the Lord do not put yourself in situations that will tempt you and destroy your testimony.

1 Corinthians 15:58 “Be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” A busy Christian has little or no time to be caught up in the sinful things of the world. There will be no room if you are bust with ministry lifting up the Name of Jesus. There are few things that will keep you in check daily and help you to walk the straight and narrow path. Be faithful in prayer 1 Thessalonians 5:17 urges us to “Pray without ceasing”. We know the family that prays together stays together. Prayer makes the darkest cloud withdraw and gives exercise to faith and love. You cannot substitute the time spent with God in prayer.
Keep busy studying the word of God and so avoid wasted time. It will keep you away from evil and avoid the temptations and helps to perfect your walk with God. Involve your whole family in prayer and encourage them to meditate on the great strength of the Bible. Be very zealous about taking time for God. Be always vigilant about your surroundings memorize the word of God. Psalm 119:11 tells us how to be a victorious believer “Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.” You will need these words when the devil shows up.
As I close I want you to fight the good fight of faith and hold on eternal life. Whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. As long as there is the devil roaming this earth, there will be temptations around us. We can defeat the devil by careful and prayerful obedience to the Word of God. So my ministers, brothers and sisters let us leave the world alone and concentrate on the battle for the right. Good behaviour, honesty, integrity, faithfulness, love and cherish the old rugged cross. I trust that your hearts are blessed and together let us defeat the enemy.
