SATAN’S TOOLS

Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and, let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1).

There are weights which are not sins in themselves, but which become distractions and stumbling blocks in our Christian progress. One of the worst of these is despondency. The heavy heart is indeed a weight that will surely drag us down in our holiness and usefulness.

The failure of Israel to enter the land of promise began in murmuring, or, as the text in Numbers literally puts it, “as it was murmured.” Just a faint desire to complain and be discontented. This led on until it blossomed and ripened into rebellion and ruin. Let us give ourselves no liberty ever to doubt God or His love and faithfulness to us in everything and forever.

We can set our will against doubt just as we do against any other sin; and as we stand firm and refuse to doubt, the Holy Spirit will come to our aid and give us the faith of God and crown us with a victory.

It is very easy to fall into the habit of doubting, fretting, and wondering if God has forsaken us and if after all, our hopes are to end in failure. Let us refuse to be discouraged. Let us refuse to be unhappy. Let us “count it all joy” when we cannot feel one emotion of happiness. Let us rejoice by faith, by resolution, by reckoning, and we shall surely find that God will make the reckoning real.

The devil has two master tricks. One is to get us discouraged; then for a time at least we can be of no service to others, and so are defeated. The other is to make us doubt, thus breaking the faith link by which we are bound to our Father. Lookout! Do not be tricked either way.

Gladness! I like to cultivate the spirit of gladness! It puts the soul so in tune again, and keeps it in tune so that Satan is shy of touching it–the chords of the soul become too warm, or too full of heavenly electricity, for his infernal fingers, and he goes off somewhere else! Satan is always very shy of meddling with me when my heart is full of gladness and joy in the Holy Ghost.

My plan is to shun the spirit of sadness as I would Satan; but, alas! I am not always successful. Like the devil himself it meets me on the highway of usefulness, looks me so fully in my face, till my poor soul changes color!

Sadness discolors everything; it leaves all objects charmless; it involves future prospects in darkness; it deprives the soul of all its aspirations, enchains all its powers, and produces a mental paralysis!

Patriarch Dr. Granville Williams remarked, that cheerfulness in religion makes all its services come off with delight; and that we are never carried forward so swiftly in the ways of duty as when borne on the wings of delight; adding, that Melancholy clips such wings; or, to alter the figure, takes off our chariot wheels in duty, and makes them, like those of the Egyptians, drag heavily. Where are you standing today? God bless you.

UNTOUCHED WISDOM

“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures.” Luke 24:45

Blessed opening, when He that hath the key of David puts in his hand by the hole of the door and opens our heart to receive his own word. Then when we go to the Word of Truth, after it has come to us, our fingers drop with sweet-smelling myrrh upon the handles of the lock.

It is said that “the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.” O, to hear the voice of the Son of God in our hearts! Surely it shall make our dead hearts, cold frames, withering hopes, dropping love, dying faith, languishing prayers, and fainting minds live; yea, revive as the corn and grow as the vine.

What is all religion without a divine beginning, middle, and end, commencing, carried on, and accomplished with a heavenly power, supernatural life, and spiritual function? Well may we be ashamed and sick of, and sorry for all our thoughts, words, and works, all our knowledge and profession that have not stood, or do not stand, in the power, teaching, and wisdom of God. All our talk has been but vain babbling, our prayers lip-service, our preaching wind and vanity, our profession hypocrisy, our knowledge the worst kind of ignorance, and all our religion carnality or delusion, if they have not been divinely communicated. Sir Isaac Newton, the wisest philosopher, is said to have remarked to one who congratulated him on his knowledge, “I have been like a little child on the sea-shore taking up a little water in a shell when the vast ocean of truth lay undiscovered before me.”

Much more may a spiritual man feel how little, how nothing he knows of the unsearchable riches of Christ, and the boundless stores of wisdom hid in them.

To my brethren that believe they have all the answers and truth about where the church stands and is going, think again because unless you freely give your spiritual insights are clogged and you cannot see afar. You are stuck in your self, believing that you the buck stops at you. I say to you this morning that you have not tapped into the canopy of God’s knowledge until you fully surrender to Him. Think on these words and the others that are living the myth.

MAKE JESUS KING OF YOUR LIFE

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah. Judges 19:1

It will be sufficient to ponder these words, which occur four times in this book, without reading further in this terrible chapter, which shows the depths of depravity to which man may sink apart from the grace of God. Where Christ is not enthroned as King, drunkenness, impurity, cruelty, selfishness, are supreme, and pursue their ravages unchecked. How different where He reigns in righteousness, and where His will is done as it is done in heaven!

I have seen today the rise of organizations in the name of church practicing and manifesting themselves to be worshippers of The Most High when they are worshipping some other person. I will not use my forum to name names but I will on another platform.

The Book of Judges depicts the state of the heart which has not admitted the Kingship of our Saviour. Where there is no recognition of this, and a man does as he likes, then the heart breeds all manner of uncleanness, and sin when it is finished bringeth forth death.

In connection with the present marvellous movement afoot in our colleges, five hundred Japanese students met recently under the motto, “Make Jesus King.” Oh that this might be our life-motto! We must crown Him Lord of all.

Let young men and women, who may read these words, especially ponder this suggestion. Perpetual failure in life indicates a failure in consecration. If you are continually broken in upon by raids of evil, it is certain that you have never enthroned the Son of God. He is never Saviour in the fullness of His power till He is acknowledged, King. Directly the coronation has taken place, He assumes the responsibility of putting down all rule, authority, and power; overcoming the evils that had held sway; and bringing every ‘ thought into captivity. Such are the warnings and appeals of this chapter and the next. “Make Jesus King.”

MY ENCOURAGEMENT TO YOU

Praise the Lord and to Him who woke us up this morning, I say thank You, Jesus. My brothers and sisters in the Lord keep trusting Him for He is good.

Let us turn to the book of Proverbs 29:3-4
3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.
4 The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

Verse 3 – A man who habitually dallies with prostitutes is selfish and lustful: traits which adversely affect his entire life. Because he is without character or wisdom, he never becomes successful and squanders his father’s resources. As our societies grow in wickedness, many are tempted into sexual sin not only through prostitutes but also through pornography. Just take a look at the politicians that manage this great country of the United States, groping, grabbing, assaulting, raping the women that look up to them for leadership. It is such a great scandal that resignations are not enough. However, the women involved should have come to the light much earlier than 40 years after. This is very chronic as it is the norm with politicians in the Caribbean. The Pope covers up for the priests under the same cloud of sexual darkness.  The Bible tells us to flee from all fornication, for we are not our own: “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body, but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which is God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:15-20).

Verse 4 – A ruler either establishes the land by good judgment or overthrows it by the corruption his evil character promotes in others. Evil leaders are more interested in the fulfilling of their own personal desires than the good of the people. Their decisions can be swayed by bribes (gifts) from unscrupulous people. A wicked king or ruler lays heavy burdens on his people, such as high taxes, in order to live luxuriously and glorify himself. As it was in the days past, so it is repeating itself before our very eyes. Take a look in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, further south to Trinidad and we can take the whole Caribbean. There were religious rulers in Jesus’ day who did the same kind of things in spiritual matters. He likened them to poisonous snakes and warned them that they were on their way to hell: “For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers…Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” (Matthew 23:4,33).

Let us pray

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for those good and righteous leaders in the world who are concerned about serving the people in a just manner. Lord, bless and protect these men and women. Give them Your wisdom in the decisions they make because they will affect many people. Father, have mercy on our land (St. Vincent and the Grenadines) and deliver the people from the many sexual sins that are destroying our world. Lord, forgive this nation for lust, selfishness, perversion, adultery, fornication, pornography, nakedness, and all the other filthy sexual indulgences that go on daily. Cleanse us from unrighteousness and make us holy. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

OBSTINATE FAITH

Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div

“And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon a heap.” (Joshua 3:13).

Brave Levites! Who can help admiring them, to carry the Ark right into the stream; for the waters were not divided till their feet dipped in the water (ver. 15). God had not promised aught else. God honours faith. “Obstinate faith,” that the PROMISE sees and “looks to that alone.” You can fancy how the people would watch these holy men march on, and some of the bystanders would be saying, “You would not catch me running that risk! Why, man, the ark will be carried away!” Not so; “the priests stood firm on dry ground.” We must not overlook the fact that faith on our part helps God to carry out His plans. “Come up to the help of the Lord.”

The Ark had staves for the shoulders. Even the Ark did not move of itself; it was carried. When God is the architect, men are the masons and labourers. Faith assists God. It can stop the mouth of lions and quench the violence of fire. It yet honours God, and God honours it. Oh, for this faith that will go on, leaving God to fulfill His promise when He sees fit! Fellow Levites, let us shoulder our load, and do not let us look as if we were carrying God’s coffin. It is the Ark of the living God! Sing as you march towards the flood!

One of the special marks of the Holy Ghost in the Mystical Church was the spirit of boldness. One of the essential qualities of the faith that is to attempt great things for God, and expect great things from God, is holy audacity. Where we are dealing with a supernatural Being, and taking from Him things that are humanly impossible, it is easier to take much than little; it is easier to stand in a place of audacious trust than in a place of cautious, timid clinging to the shore.

Likewise, seamen in the life of faith, let us launch out into the deep, and find that all things are possible with God, and all things are possible unto him that believeth.

Let us, today, attempt great things for God; take His faith and believe in them and His strength to accomplish them.

PRAY AND PRAY

“Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.” (Luke 10:2).

Prayer is the mighty engine that is to move the missionary work. “Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest that He will send forth labourers into His harvest.”

We are asking God to touch the hearts of men every day by the Holy Ghost so that they shall be compelled to go abroad and preach the Gospel. We are asking Him to wake them up at night with the solemn conviction that the heathen is perishing, and that their blood will be upon their souls, and God is answering the prayer by sending persons to us every day who “feel that the King’s business requireth haste.” Are you one that has answered the call?

Beloved, pray, pray, pray; and as the incense rises to the heavens, “there will be silence in heaven” by the space of more than half an hour, and the coals of fire will be emptied out upon the earth, and the coming of the Lord will begin to draw nearer. Pray till the Lord of the harvest shall thrust forth labourers into His harvest.

GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE

Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;” (I Peter 2:9).

We have been thinking lately very much of the strange way in which God is calling a people out of a people already called. The word ecclesia, or church, means called out, but God is calling out a still more select body from the church to be His bride–the specially prepared ones for His coming.

We see a fine type of this in the story of Gideon. When first he sounded the trumpet of Abiezer there resorted to him more than thirty thousand men; but these had to be picked, so a first test was applied, appealing to their courage, and all but ten thousand went back; but there must be an election out of the election, and so a second test was applied, appealing to their prudence, caution and singleness of purpose, and all but three hundred were refused; and, with this little-picked band, he raised the standard against the Midianites, and through the power of God won his glorious victory. So, again, in our days, the Master is choosing His three hundred, and by them, He will yet win the world for Himself. Let us be sure that we belong to the “out and out” people.

Brethren whatever is taking place now is for a reason to fulfill the will and plan of God. The buildings called churches are filled with people but where are they going is my question? What are the motivation and purpose? Why are you there? Who called you to the gathering? So many questions with so few answers from man or the mainstream. Make sure your election is sure and bless the Lord.

THE SPIRIT OF DELAY!

Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div

Many of you have been facing unprecedented setbacks and delays in your life. It is almost as if, just when you’re about to cross the finish line with one exhausting situation, there is something or someone strategically positioned to cause you to not only not meet that finish point but simultaneously cause you to start all over again.

For example, there is a delay in your pay, a delay in your promotion, a delay with your schooling (scholarships, grants, student loans etc.). A delay with answered prayers, delays in your marriage, delays in your finances, delays with plans coming together and the list goes on.

I want to speak to those who have spiritual ears, to listen carefully and put into action IMMEDIATELY what the Holy Spirit has to say to you IF YOU DESIRE RELIEF AND VICTORY! The Lord is saying to you that you must, without delay begins to pray SPECIFICALLY against the SPIRIT OF DELAY THAT HAS INTENTIONALLY ATTACHED  ITSELF TO YOUR PROGRESS! You must launch an all-out attack against this spirit that has been specifically commissioned by the Enemy to DELAY AND FRUSTRATE everyone that’s positioned for blessings, miracles, breakthroughs, turn around and change in their lives.

The evidence of this wicked spirit is that absolutely nothing seems to be coming together for you; it appears as if every time you put one step forward something or someone is taking or pulling you two steps backward. The Lord said to tell you that the people, places, and things that you’ve concluded as the source of your delays and setbacks are smoke screens and agents of this wicked spirit who’s determined to accomplish his assignment by operating behind the scenes (incognito).

The Lord said to remove your focus on what has been physically misleading you (people, places and things) and place your attention on what’s not visible and that is this evil spirit of delay. You must look for anything that remotely resembles the behavior or actions of delay in order to distinguish this conniving spirit. As a reminder, scripture says the following in regards to this matter: “While we look not at the things which are seen (people, places, and things), but at the things which are not seen (spirits operating behind those people, places and things): for the things which are seen are temporal (distraction); but the things which are not seen are eternal” 2 Corinthians 4:18.

My brothers and sisters hear what I am saying to you, Your friend is not delaying you, the place you’re at is not delaying you, that thing is not delaying you…… IT IS THE SPIRIT OF DELAY THAT IS USING THAT PERSON, PLACE OR THING as a point of contact SOLELY TO DELAY YOU FROM YOUR DIVINE APPOINTED BLESSINGS, BREAKTHROUGHS, MIRACLES AND WHATEVER IT IS THAT GOD HAS ASSIGNED FOR YOU BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, Ephesians 1:3-4. Many folks have entered their season of divine release but were unaware of this spirit of delay, which robbed them of all that their seasons had to offer. The enemy will not sit back and allow you to be blessed…. He will fight you tooth and nail; nevertheless, the Lord has provided us with the name of this invisible spiritual entity that has been successful and unhindered throughout the years in robbing his people; simply because they were unaware of who he is and his purpose for showing up in their lives.

As a reminder, scripture did not say that the people of God were being destroyed because they’re fornicating, lying, stealing, cursing etc. Instead, the scripture specifically stated that the people of God were perishing or being destroyed because they LACKED KNOWLEDGE! Hosea 4:6. In other words, it was what they didn’t know that will continue to give power to their spiritual oppressors. That’s right my brothers and sisters, it is in your not knowing the root of your setbacks and delays in your life that has provided a format of allowing you to go so far but never ever arriving at the next level. You must become aggressive and determine the same way this spirit of delay is aggressive and determine against you. Curse and bind the spirit of delay from over every area of your life NOW!

Heavenly Father, we come in agreement with your word according to Jeremiah 23:29 which says, “Is not my word like a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?. We speak this word with the authority you’ve given us and release your judgment fire against this spirit of delay like you did in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. Father, every plan, plot, scheme, distraction, manipulation, seen and unseen launched by this spirit we command its spiritual and physical counsel to fall to the ground in the mighty name of Jesus Christ! Father, we command this evil spirit by the power of your word and the blood of your son Jesus Christ to release and restore all that he has stolen from your people according to your word in Proverbs 6:30-31, which says, “Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house”.

WE COMMAND THIS THIEF “THE SPIRIT OF DELAY” TO RESTORE SEVENFOLD ALL THAT HE HAS STOLEN INCLUDING THE SUBSTANCE OF HIS HOUSE ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF GOD IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST!

“My people are being destroyed because they lack knowledge” Hosea 4:6 God has just provided you the necessary knowledge to avoid destruction!

NUMBERS AND SCRIPTURES

images/I9.gifIn the Jewish mind, the subject of numbers is very significant. Throughout the Scriptures, there are obvious references to specific numbers that were undeniably placed there by the Holy Spirit because of some special significance.

Patrick Fairbairn said:

“If God has given all things their significance, and defined their bounds according to time, space, power, and number, and if He has appointed certain measurements to regulate things and times, Biblical numbers must be symbolical, and be worthy of our study; and if a fit subject for study, the laws by which this symbolism of numbers is controlled, require to be ascertained.”

The precise symbolic intent of any of these numbers in a specific passage in the Bible can never be proved to the satisfaction of all interpreters, but some generalizations hold true in many cases.

The Number 3

The number 3 seems to represent triads of completeness in the Bible. Sometimes of good and sometimes of evil. For example:

  1. The Triune God- Father, son, and Holy Spirit.
  2. The trinity of evil- The dragon, antichrist, and false prophet.
  3. The trinity of blessing- grace, mercy, and peace.
  4. The trinity of wickedness- The world, the flesh, & the devil.
  5. Heaven, earth, and the underworld.
  6. Beginning, middle, and end.
  7. Notice in Thessalonians all the three-fold statements.
  8. The trinity of the Scriptures- The law, prophets, and writings.
  9. Jesus rose on the third day.

Notice what Paul mentions about Salvation:

2 Corinthians 1:10 who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us,

Man is body, soul, and spirit.

Time is past, present, and future.

Space is 3-dimensional: length, width, and height.

The universe is space, time, and matter.

Similarly, in the Bible, many rituals are carried out in threes-daily prayers and yearly fasts. Three is also associated with sacrifices-animals often had to be three years old (Genesis 15:9); fruit was not to be harvested until three years after the tree was planted (Leviticus 19:23).

The Number 4

The Number 4 is thought to represent Gods absolute control over the world.

  • 4 Directions on the earth (north, south, east, and west).
  • 4 Seasons (summer, autumn, winter, and spring).
  • 4 Things that make up the universe (time, energy, space, and matter).
  • 4 Major provisions for man (earth, air, fire, and water).
  • 4 Divisions of the day (morning, noon, evening, and midnight).
  • 4 Winds (Matthew 24:31)

The Bible mentions the number 4 many times: (Here’s just a few)

John 11:17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

John 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.

Revelation 7:1 After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree.

Revelation 9:13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

Revelation 21:16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal.

  • Notice all the times 4 is used in Proverbs 30
  • The fourth man in the fiery furnace
  • The 4 generals who took over Alexanders kingdom (broken by God)
  • The 4 world empires (beasts) of Daniel
  • The 4 horns (gentile powers) of Zechariah

Four seems to represent cosmic order, as in the four phases of the moon, the four cardinal points of the earth, the four rivers of Paradise (Genesis 2:10), the four winds of heaven Jeremiah 49:36), the four guardians of the throne of God, and so forth.

But the number four can also represent God bringing disorder, for example, the Four Horsemen who bring calamity on the earth (Revelation 6:1-8) and the four acts of Judgment (sword, famine, evil beasts, and pestilence) with which God condemns the idolators of Jerusalem (Ezekiel 14:21).

The Number 5

Because man has 5 fingers, 5 toes, and 5 senses the number 5 is significant and thought to be the number of human weakness. He is considered weak and dependent. The number 5 may speak of man’s weakness and inability or God’s strength and ability. Some interesting examples:

  • The 5 loaves were not enough to feed the great multitude.
  • The 5 brothers in Luke 16 could not keep themselves out of Hades.
  • The 5 husbands could not satisfy the woman at the well.

The Number 6

The number 6 is thought to represent man’s weakness and inability to achieve perfection and sinlessness. Because of sin, a man must work for 6 days to remember his sin. 6 can also be seen as the number of evil and its full development. Rebellion will run its full course with the man of sin and the number of his name, 666.

The Number 7

The number 7 perhaps speaks of perfection or completeness. God’s complete provision in His dealings with men.

Some examples:

  • 7 days make a complete week
  • 7 colors make a perfect spectrum
  • 7 great land masses form a complete earth
  • 7 notes make a perfect scale
  • 7 great bodies of water form a complete ocean

There were the 7 days of creation as well as many other examples throughout the Scriptures:

Zechariah 3:9 For behold, the stone that I have laid before Joshua: upon the stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’ says the LORD of hosts, `And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

Revelation 1:4 John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne,

  1. To the Jew, every 7th day was a Sabbath.
  2. Every 7th year was a Sabbatical year.
  3. After the 7th Sabbatical year was the year of Jubilee.
  4. Every 7th month was holy and had 3 feasts.
  5. There were 7 weeks between Passover and Pentecost.
  6. The Passover feast lasted 7 days.
  7. The Feast of Tabernacles lasted 7 days.
  8. At Passover 14 lambs (7 twice) were offered daily.
  9. At Tabernacles 14 lambs (7 twice) and 70 bullocks were offered.
  10. At Pentecost 7 lambs were offered.
  11. The time of mourning the dead was fixed to 7 days.

and so on…

Seven continues to have symbolic prominence in the New Testament, with Jesus telling Peter that it is not enough that he forgive the brother who had sinned against him seven times, but “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:21-22). Seven is also the number of Greek-speaking Christians appointed by the Twelve Apostles in Acts 6:3.

The New Testament concludes in a “great surge of sevens, with heptads, explicit and implicit, tumbling forth from many verses.”

In the Book of Revelation there were:

  • The 7 letters to the 7 Churches.
  • The 7 Seal Judgements
  • The 7 Trumpet Judgements
  • The 7 Bowl Judgements
  • The 7 Golden Lampstands
  • The 7 Stars
  • The 7 Angels
  • The 7 Spirits of God
  • The Lamb with 7 Horns and 7 Eyes.
  • The 7 Lamps of Fire
  • The 7 Claps of thunder
  • The Fiery Red Dragon with 7 heads and 7 Crowns.
  • The Leopard-Like Beast with 7 heads.
  • The Scarlet-Colored Beast with 7 heads.
  • The 7 Mountains
  • The 7 Kings

Jewish Tradition

According to Jewish tradition, the creation of the first man was completed in 7 hours:

“How was Adam created? In the first hour his dust was collected; in the second his form was created; in the third he became a shapeless mass; in the fourth his members were joined; in the fifth his apertures were opened; in the sixth he received his soul; in the seventh he stood up on his feet . . .” [The Talmud]

The Number 8

The Number 8 is thought to represent the number of new beginnings. A male child was circumcised on the 8th day. The Sabbath lasted 7 days and the 8th day was the Lord’s day, the new day. The number 8 speaks of Jesus and the New Covenant. The church met on the 8th day or the first day, the new day.

The Number 10

The number 10 is a very significant number in the Bible. In examining the uses of the number 10 in Scripture it seems to represent human failure and God’s provision. For example:

– The 10 spies failed to see Gods power and provision, so they brought back an evil report:

Numbers 13:32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.

– The 10 tribes failed to walk with God and to do His will. Therefore, they established a separate kingdom given to idolatry:

  1. Kings 11:31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: `Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to you
  2. Kings 17:22-23 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they did not depart from them, until the LORD removed Israel out of His sight, as He had said by all His servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away from their own land to Assyria, as it is to this day.

– The magicians and astrologers were 10 times as weak and insufficient as Daniel:

Daniel 1:20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding about which the king examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm.

– The 10 lepers were unable to cure themselves, they needed Jesus:

Luke 17:12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off.

The Number 12

The number 12 has been thought to represent the number of God’s government. The ancient people recognized 12 lunar cycles corresponding loosely to 12 months in the year, and they divided the day and the night into 12-hour periods. They went on to organize the stars into the 12 signs of the Zodiac, and from their observations of the wanderings of the 7 planets through the 12 houses of heaven was born astrology.

The Bible tells that Jacob-Israel had 12 sons (Genesis 35:22-27) and that each of these became the founder of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, the people of God (Genesis 49:28). Jesus chose Twelve Apostles (Matthew 10:2-4) for the beginnings of the Church. There were 24 classes of priests and Levites (1 Chronicles 24:4) and 48 Levitical cities (Numbers 35:7).

And again in the Book of Revelation, the number 12 becomes very important when symbolizing the salvation of God’s people. There are 24 elders around the throne of God and 144,000 of the saved (Revelation 4:4; 7:4). The perfection of the new Jerusalem is seen in its 12 gates, each “a single pearl,” and 12 foundations, each adorned with jewels. Its circumference is 12,000 furlongs, and its walls are 144 cubits high (Revelation 21:10-21; Ezekiel 48:30-35).

The Number 40

The number 40 seems to be around the number in Scripture denoting a generation. Some of the judges judged for 40 years (Othniel, Deborah, Barak, and Gideon). Saul, David, and Solomon each reigned as king for 40 years.

The Scriptures speak of the number 40 often:

  • The flood rains lasted 40 days and 40 nights
  • Moses was in the Egypt 40 years, Midian 40 years, and on the mountain 40 days.
  • Israel wandered in the wilderness 40 years.
  • The spies were in Canaan for 40 days.
  • Elijah fasted 40 days.
  • 40 days was given to Nineveh.
  • Jesus fasted 40 days
  • Jesus was with His disciples for 40 days after His resurrection (Acts 1:3).

OBEDIENCE BRINGS BLESSINGS

And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless, at thy word, I will let down the net. —Luke 5:5.

Oh, what a blessed formula for us! This path of mine is dark, mysterious, perplexing; nevertheless, at your word, I will go forward. This trial of mine is cutting, sore for flesh and blood to bear. It is hard to breathe through a broken heart, Thy will be done. But, nevertheless, at your word, I will say, “Even so, Father!” This besetting habit, or infirmity, or sin of mine, is difficult to crucify. It has become part of myself—a second nature; to be severed from it would be like the cutting off of a right hand or the plucking out of a right eye; nevertheless, at your word, I will lay aside every weight; this idol I will utterly abolish. This righteousness of mine it is hard to ignore; all these virtues, and amiabilities, and natural graces, it is hard to believe that they dare not in any way be mixed up in the matter of my salvation; and that I am to receive all from first to last as the gift of God, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Nevertheless, at your word “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things” [Philippians 3:8].
