SATAN’S TOOLS

Sir Godfrey Gregg D.Div

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and, let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1).

There are weights which are not sins in themselves, but which become distractions and stumbling blocks in our Christian progress. One of the worst of these is despondency. The heavy heart is indeed a weight that will surely drag us down in our holiness and usefulness.

The failure of Israel to enter the land of promise began in murmuring, or, as the text in Numbers literally puts it, “as it was murmured.” Just a faint desire to complain and be discontented. This led on until it blossomed and ripened into rebellion and ruin. Let us give ourselves no liberty ever to doubt God or His love and faithfulness to us in everything and forever.

We can set our will against doubt just as we do against any other sin; and as we stand firm and refuse to doubt, the Holy Spirit will come to our aid and give us the faith of God and crown us with a victory.

It is very easy to fall into the habit of doubting, fretting, and wondering if God has forsaken us and if after all, our hopes are to end in failure. Let us refuse to be discouraged. Let us refuse to be unhappy. Let us “count it all joy” when we cannot feel one emotion of happiness. Let us rejoice by faith, by resolution, by reckoning, and we shall surely find that God will make the reckoning real.

The devil has two master tricks. One is to get us discouraged; then for a time at least we can be of no service to others, and so are defeated. The other is to make us doubt, thus breaking the faith link by which we are bound to our Father. Lookout! Do not be tricked either way.

Gladness! I like to cultivate the spirit of gladness! It puts the soul so in tune again, and keeps it in tune so that Satan is shy of touching it–the chords of the soul become too warm, or too full of heavenly electricity, for his infernal fingers, and he goes off somewhere else! Satan is always very shy of meddling with me when my heart is full of gladness and joy in the Holy Ghost.

My plan is to shun the spirit of sadness as I would Satan; but, alas! I am not always successful. Like the devil himself it meets me on the highway of usefulness, looks me so fully in my face, till my poor soul changes color!

Sadness discolors everything; it leaves all objects charmless; it involves future prospects in darkness; it deprives the soul of all its aspirations, enchains all its powers, and produces a mental paralysis!

Patriarch Dr. Granville Williams remarked, that cheerfulness in religion makes all its services come off with delight; and that we are never carried forward so swiftly in the ways of duty as when borne on the wings of delight; adding, that Melancholy clips such wings; or, to alter the figure, takes off our chariot wheels in duty, and makes them, like those of the Egyptians, drag heavily. Where are you standing today? God bless you.

UNTOUCHED WISDOM

“Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures.” Luke 24:45

Blessed opening, when He that hath the key of David puts in his hand by the hole of the door and opens our heart to receive his own word. Then when we go to the Word of Truth, after it has come to us, our fingers drop with sweet-smelling myrrh upon the handles of the lock.

It is said that “the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.” O, to hear the voice of the Son of God in our hearts! Surely it shall make our dead hearts, cold frames, withering hopes, dropping love, dying faith, languishing prayers, and fainting minds live; yea, revive as the corn and grow as the vine.

What is all religion without a divine beginning, middle, and end, commencing, carried on, and accomplished with a heavenly power, supernatural life, and spiritual function? Well may we be ashamed and sick of, and sorry for all our thoughts, words, and works, all our knowledge and profession that have not stood, or do not stand, in the power, teaching, and wisdom of God. All our talk has been but vain babbling, our prayers lip-service, our preaching wind and vanity, our profession hypocrisy, our knowledge the worst kind of ignorance, and all our religion carnality or delusion, if they have not been divinely communicated. Sir Isaac Newton, the wisest philosopher, is said to have remarked to one who congratulated him on his knowledge, “I have been like a little child on the sea-shore taking up a little water in a shell when the vast ocean of truth lay undiscovered before me.”

Much more may a spiritual man feel how little, how nothing he knows of the unsearchable riches of Christ, and the boundless stores of wisdom hid in them.

To my brethren that believe they have all the answers and truth about where the church stands and is going, think again because unless you freely give your spiritual insights are clogged and you cannot see afar. You are stuck in your self, believing that you the buck stops at you. I say to you this morning that you have not tapped into the canopy of God’s knowledge until you fully surrender to Him. Think on these words and the others that are living the myth.

MAKE JESUS KING OF YOUR LIFE

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah. Judges 19:1

It will be sufficient to ponder these words, which occur four times in this book, without reading further in this terrible chapter, which shows the depths of depravity to which man may sink apart from the grace of God. Where Christ is not enthroned as King, drunkenness, impurity, cruelty, selfishness, are supreme, and pursue their ravages unchecked. How different where He reigns in righteousness, and where His will is done as it is done in heaven!

I have seen today the rise of organizations in the name of church practicing and manifesting themselves to be worshippers of The Most High when they are worshipping some other person. I will not use my forum to name names but I will on another platform.

The Book of Judges depicts the state of the heart which has not admitted the Kingship of our Saviour. Where there is no recognition of this, and a man does as he likes, then the heart breeds all manner of uncleanness, and sin when it is finished bringeth forth death.

In connection with the present marvellous movement afoot in our colleges, five hundred Japanese students met recently under the motto, “Make Jesus King.” Oh that this might be our life-motto! We must crown Him Lord of all.

Let young men and women, who may read these words, especially ponder this suggestion. Perpetual failure in life indicates a failure in consecration. If you are continually broken in upon by raids of evil, it is certain that you have never enthroned the Son of God. He is never Saviour in the fullness of His power till He is acknowledged, King. Directly the coronation has taken place, He assumes the responsibility of putting down all rule, authority, and power; overcoming the evils that had held sway; and bringing every ‘ thought into captivity. Such are the warnings and appeals of this chapter and the next. “Make Jesus King.”

MY ENCOURAGEMENT TO YOU

Praise the Lord and to Him who woke us up this morning, I say thank You, Jesus. My brothers and sisters in the Lord keep trusting Him for He is good.

Let us turn to the book of Proverbs 29:3-4
3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.
4 The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

Verse 3 – A man who habitually dallies with prostitutes is selfish and lustful: traits which adversely affect his entire life. Because he is without character or wisdom, he never becomes successful and squanders his father’s resources. As our societies grow in wickedness, many are tempted into sexual sin not only through prostitutes but also through pornography. Just take a look at the politicians that manage this great country of the United States, groping, grabbing, assaulting, raping the women that look up to them for leadership. It is such a great scandal that resignations are not enough. However, the women involved should have come to the light much earlier than 40 years after. This is very chronic as it is the norm with politicians in the Caribbean. The Pope covers up for the priests under the same cloud of sexual darkness.  The Bible tells us to flee from all fornication, for we are not our own: “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body, but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which is God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:15-20).

Verse 4 – A ruler either establishes the land by good judgment or overthrows it by the corruption his evil character promotes in others. Evil leaders are more interested in the fulfilling of their own personal desires than the good of the people. Their decisions can be swayed by bribes (gifts) from unscrupulous people. A wicked king or ruler lays heavy burdens on his people, such as high taxes, in order to live luxuriously and glorify himself. As it was in the days past, so it is repeating itself before our very eyes. Take a look in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, further south to Trinidad and we can take the whole Caribbean. There were religious rulers in Jesus’ day who did the same kind of things in spiritual matters. He likened them to poisonous snakes and warned them that they were on their way to hell: “For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers…Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” (Matthew 23:4,33).

Let us pray

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for those good and righteous leaders in the world who are concerned about serving the people in a just manner. Lord, bless and protect these men and women. Give them Your wisdom in the decisions they make because they will affect many people. Father, have mercy on our land (St. Vincent and the Grenadines) and deliver the people from the many sexual sins that are destroying our world. Lord, forgive this nation for lust, selfishness, perversion, adultery, fornication, pornography, nakedness, and all the other filthy sexual indulgences that go on daily. Cleanse us from unrighteousness and make us holy. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
